Swithun's Allington St Swithun's Church was built between 1825 and 1827. It replaced the original, much smaller, village church which was about a mile north of the present building, alongside its vicarage which still serves the original use. Architecturally St Swithun's is a fine example of Georgian style. Even in the early years of this century some seeds of the "Oxford Movement" (an Anglican Catholic revival) were beginning to flourish in the form and furnishing of its services. Certainly by the end of the Great War, vestments, incense and Reservation were in general use. St Swithun's remained an independent parish until the formation of the Team Ministry in 1976. The District Church Council has passed resolutions "A", "B" and "C" which the Diocesan Bishop respects. The Liturgy of St Swithun's has always embraced the fullness of English traditional worship which is so cherished here today. There is a modern rite used too. The focus of our worship is the Mass which is sung on Sundays and other Feast Days with regular said Masses during the week. The church has a band of servers, both adult and children. We have an active Sunday School. There is a new crèche area formed at the back of the church. The organist-choirmaster trains the adult choir and junior choirs to produce the music for the Sung Mass and Evensong and Benediction. We also have occasional Family Services. The Vestry extension was added to the Western end of St Swithun's during 1991 which consists of a Sacristy, robing area for choir and servers, a hall, kitchen, washing and toilet facilities. The amenity is a great asset to the church in its use for Sunday School, Church Meetings, Social Events, Women's' Guild, Christian Listening Service, church fund-raising and Play School. The Vestry is also used extensively by the local community of Allington which, St Swithun's serves, as well as a place providing fellowship for our regular congregation. A recent redecoration of the Church building inside has enhanced the beauty of the church. Local craftsmen gave their services for this free which shows the good will local people have for St Swithun's. Because of vandalisms and thefts we have to keep the church locked quite often but it is opened, naturally, all Sunday mornings and all Thursday and Saturday mornings and for the 7 p.m. Tuesday Mass and the 8.30 a.m. Wednesday Mass. Coffee etc is served after the 9.30 a.m. Mass on the first and third Sundays of the month. |
