Successful Selection for Ann Ayling.
Ann has been selected to begin training for the Ordained Local Ministry in September 2007. A member of St Mary's Walditch, she has has served as a churchwarden there for some years. She is also a foundation governor at St Mary's CE VC Primary School in Bridport. Ann has many qualities and interests. Before she retired to Bridport she served at all levels of teaching in secondary schools including being Head in a secondary girl's school in Mitcham, London. Drama and English were at the heart of Ann's teaching career, but her concern for the young people always took precedence over the subject areas. Whilst there she was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Association. She is currently connected with the local children's "Encore Theatre Club". Other activities include the DDAAS Drop-In Centre, a support group for women partners and parents of drug and alcohol users, the Women's Institute (a founder member in Walditch), the Village Hall Committee (a former chairman) and the Real Tennis Club in Walditch. Over the last few years Ann has gained a gold award in the "Discovery Award Scheme" for the over 50s, which has taken her to Nepal where she did a charity trek for LEPRA, with subsequent speaking engagements. Last year she visited Uganda with a party from Christchurch Deanery to make contact with and help Church members there. Raising money for "Counsel and Care" (advice and help for older people), and helping with the local Children's Thursday Christian Club have also featured in Ann's busy diary. Please keep Ann and her Parish Learning Group (who will support her during training) in your prayers
Wonderful Weekend with our Twinned Parish.
The last few days in April 2007 saw the latest exchange of the parish twinning with the parish of Roumois in Normandy. Roumois (just to the south of Rouen) is a large parish with around 40 churches in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Evreux. The parish twinning is part of the Diocesan link between the dioceses of Salisbury and Evreux and has been in existence now for 12 years. Every other year a party from Roumois visits Bridport, and Bridport visits Roumois in the intervening years. This year our French friends worshipped at St Mary's Walditch. An important part of the coming together is fellowship and mutual support - and some of this takes place during the extended communal meals. Members of the parish take the visitors into their own homes over night. Outings were arranged to take advantage of the fine weather, and a fascinating tour of the Forest Products crisp factory on the Dreadnought Trading Estate provided something different on the Monday morning before the party left for the ferry. Thanks to all those who offered hospitality, cooked or drove over the weekend - and special thanks to Peter Green who did most of the organising. A coffee morning to raise funds to defray expenses will be arranged in the next few months when people can view the photos taken during the weekend. Watch the Bridge for the arrangements
Licensing of The Revd Peter Edwards
On Monday August 4th at 7.30pm, The Revd Peter Edwards was Licensened at St Swithun's Church Allington, to the Bridport and Valleys Group. The church was packed with supporters from the Bridport Team and far a field. The Bishop of Sherborne, The Rt. Revd Timothy Thornton led the service assisted by The Bishop of Ebbsfleet, The Rt. Revd Andrew Burnham who also preached the sermon.
St Mary’s Church was packed for the farewell service for Trevor and Tina Stubbs. In the afternoon of
Sunday January 18th Bridport said a final goodbye, representatives from all the churches and many
organisations attended, they came from far and wide, including Roumois in Normandy. It was a very
lively service followed by refreshments in the church hall.
Trevor and Tina are moving to Juba in the southern part of the African country, 1000 miles from
Dafur, to work at a priests college in a community still recovering from decades of civil war.
Many people in Juba have turned to Christianity and they have lots of ordained priests who are not
trained, so this is the area where they will be working.
They will work at Bishop Gwynne Theological College for two to three years. Helping to
upgrade the college’s programme of education, as well as advising local primary schools.
Trevor and Tina moved to Dorset in 1989 and he was Rector of Wool and East Stoke before moving
to Bridport 14 years ago, where he has been team rector. Tina has worked as a supply teacher at
Bridport Primary School and St Mary’s Primary school, where she has also been a governor until now.
They have both fallen in love with Bridport and are sorry to leave but know that they must respond to God's.will.
